The USS DULUTH (LPD-6), an Austin class amphibious transport dock, was commissioned on 18 DEC 1965. USS DULUTH was the third, and last, of the "Austins" built at the New York Naval shipyard in Brooklyn, NY. After commissioning she steamed for her new hompeport of San Diego and then on to the Western Pacific and Vietnamese waters. DULUTH deployed five time to Vietnam, the last, assisting with Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon. A sample of latter deployments: Beruit, Lebanon during their Civil War in 1983, assisting with the Exxon Valdez Oil spill in 1989, the evacuation of Somalia in 1994. Whether tasked with a routine or contingency operation, USS DULUTH performed per her motto, "Fortiter In Re (Bold in Action)". USS DULUTH served her country for 39 years, 9 months and 25 days, until decommissioned on 13 OCT 2005. After decommissioning DULUTH was assigned to the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility - Pearl Harbor.
