Bauer (DE-1025) was launched 4 June 1957 by Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp. San Francisco Calif.; sponsored by Mrs. H. W. Bauer widow of Lieutenant Colonel Bauer; and commissioned 21 November 1957 Lieutenant Commander L. D. Cummins in command.
