DD-380 USS Gridley
USS Gridley was built at Quincy, Massachusetts in December 1936. She was commissioned the following June, in 1937, and sent on shakedown in the Caribbean until October 1938. She was sent back to Boston at that time for alterations, and then onward to San Diego to join Destroyer Division 11. After months of tactical training and exercises, she went on to the Caribbean once again, for combined maneuvers this time. At the end of this mission, she returned to Boston for repairs and then back to San Diego to become the Division 11 flagship.
In 1941, USS Gridley sailed to Pearl Harbor and was involved in escort services and repair operations in the South Pacific. After many months of escorting services, she was returned to San Diego in September 1943 for repairs. After this, she returned again to the South Pacific to help with bombardment, screening, and patrols in the area until December 1943. In January 1944, she was involved in screening during the New Guinea and Marshalls offensives, and then went on to help in other invasions and patrols in the area. USS Gridley was sent back to New York in March 1945 for repairs, and then departed the U.S. in June.
