U.S.S. NASSAU

USS Nassau was an escort carrier that was commissioned on August 20, 1942. She was put into operation in October and headed for Pearl Harbor and then Palmyra Island. She worked in the South Pacific for the next four months before returning to Pearl Harbor to take on ferry duties.

She then headed back to California for more flight training, and then headed out on search missions in May of 1943 as well as flight operations and air escorts. In May, she came back to the U.S. and did more ferrying tours, this time to Australia and Samoa.

She continued flight operations, ferrying cruises, and air support throughout the Pacific, including trips to Pearl Harbor, the Marshall Islands, Majuro, Kwajalein, the Admiralties, and Palau, as well as the Philippines, Manus, and the Caroline Islands. Finally, she was sent on to Alameda in March 1946 and then to Tacoma, Washington. Here, she was decommissioned in October, entering the Pacific Reserve Fleet.

She was re-classified as CVHE-16 in June of 1955. The vessel was then transferred to the Bremerton Reserve Group and struck from the Navy list in March of 1959. She was subsequently towed to Japan for scrapping in June 1961. Nassau received five battle stars for service in World War II.
