CVE-13 USS CORE

USS Core was named for a sound off the North Carolina Coast. She was brought into service on Dec. 10, 1942. After shakedown, she was sent to the Atlantic Fleet in April 1943. She was used for training pilots until late June. Then she became part of the submarine hunter groups sent out into the North Atlantic.

Her first patrol saw three U-boats sunk, two by her planes and one by one of her escorts. In August, she grabbed two more kills with U-86 and U-185 on the same day. In October, her next run caught U-378 and sunk her. Late 1943 through mid 1944, the ship was used for cargo and troop transport to Great Britain.

In mid-1944, Core returned to submarine patrol off of Bermuda. In October she reported to Norfolk for an overhaul. In January 1945, she sailed with an escort to take on weather reporting submarines in the North Atlantic. There were no successful attacks. She went to Cuba to join a larger group patrolling the North and Central Atlantic. On April 24, the group was successful with a German U-boat sinking.

In June 1945, the ship was sent to the Pacific fleet. She carried aircraft and personnel from the west coast. After the war ceased, she undertook the same duty going eastbound. She was taken out of service Oct. 4, 1946.
