BB-36 USS NEVADA
The Navy brought USS Nevada into service with her commission in March 1916. For the next couple of years, the ship served along the Eastern Seaboard and in the Caribbean. During the First World War, she reported for duty around the British Isles. The ship participated in patrols and maneuvers in the Pacific and Atlantic over the next decade. Cruises to Brazil and Australia highlighted this time. In 1927, the ship underwent a three-year modernization project to improve her armaments and guns. Over the next decade, the ship operated mainly in the Pacific.
USS Nevada was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She was the only battleship to get underway. This made her a target for several attacks that left her severely damaged. Her crew beached the ship to save her from sinking. After making temporary repairs, the ship went to the West Coast for repairs. She returned to service in May 1943. USS Nevada helped with the Attu action before reporting to the Atlantic. She provided gun protection during the Normandy and Southern France invasions in 1944. The ship went back to the Pacific and provided cover at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After serving as a target ship at Bikini Island in 1946, the Navy ordered her scuttled in 1948.
